Obverse description Frontal crowned effigy of James III within a double tressure, the king depicted with long flowing hair and wearing an ornate crown, rendered in the characteristically flat medieval Scottish hammered style. A saltire device flanks either side of the king's neck at the base of the bust, serving as a distinctly Scottish heraldic element. The effigy is enclosed within an inner beaded circle, beyond which runs the circular legend in uncial Gothic lettering. The portrait, though stylised, conveys regal dignity consistent with the Light Issue coinage of circa 1467.
