| Obverse description | Front-facing crowned effigy of King James I, rendered in the flat, stylised manner characteristic of early fifteenth-century Scottish hammered coinage. The crown is large and prominently features a tall fleur-de-lis at its centre, flanked by smaller ornamental elements. The king's face is depicted in an archaic, hieratic style with minimal modelling. The royal portrait fills the inner field, encircled by a beaded inner circle.
