The pinecone-mascle issue takes its name from the two privy marks used sequentially at the London and Calais mints during this short window — a pinecone followed by a mascle, a voided lozenge shape. Privy marks of this period weren't decorative; they were administrative tools allowing the Tower to date batches of coin and identify responsible moneyers if silver content or weight came under scrutiny.
Henry VI's minority government was still managing the monetary fallout from years of French war expenditure. The Calais mint, supplied directly by continental bullion flows, often struck in greater volume than London during these years.
