Manuel Pinto de Fonseca served as Grand Master of the Order of St. John from 1741 until his death in 1773 — an unusually long tenure that coincided with the Order's increasingly precarious hold on Malta as Enlightenment-era European powers grew skeptical of its relevance. The grano was the smallest denomination in Hospitaller coinage, and copper issues of this type circulated heavily among the Maltese population while silver and gold largely left the island through trade.
