Manuel Pinto de Fonseca, a Portuguese nobleman elected Grand Master in 1741, ruled the Order for an extraordinary 32 years — the longest tenure of any 18th-century Grand Master. His administration coincided with a period of fiscal strain as the Order's relevance in Mediterranean naval affairs steadily contracted. The copper grano sat at the lowest denomination in the Order's coinage hierarchy, struck primarily to facilitate small commerce within Malta's tightly controlled economy rather than to project political authority.
