| Obverse description | Central device depicting the eight-pointed Maltese Cross of the Order of Saint John, rendered in relief within a roughly circular field characteristic of hammered coinage. The cross arms are boldly struck and occupy the majority of the flan. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central cross, reading +F.ANTONIVS DE PAVLA M.M, identifying the issuing Grand Master, Frater Antoine de Paule. The flan shows the typical irregular, slightly cupped characteristics of hand-struck copper coinage of the period. The overall execution is plain and functional, consistent with the low-denomination fiduciary coinage of the Hospitaller mint at Valletta. |
