The title 'BANQUE NATIONALE DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE D'HAÏTI' arcs along the outer border in bold engraved lettering, while large numeral '1' counters appear at left and right within dense lathe-work panels. The denomination 'UNE GOURDE' is repeated in a rectangular cartouche at the foot of the design, with the printer's imprint 'AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY.' below. |

The Banque Nationale de la République d'Haïti held a dual role unusual for the period — simultaneously acting as the country's central bank and its treasury, a arrangement formalized under American-influenced reorganization following the U.S. occupation that ended in 1934. The ABNC's long relationship with Haitian currency issues meant the 1 Gourde plates were refined across multiple decades, with the series letter prefix advancing incrementally as successive print orders were fulfilled through the 1950s and into the early 1960s.
The gourde itself had been pegged at 5 to the U.S. dollar since 1919, a fixed rate that held with remarkable rigidity through this entire series run.
