The République Septentrionale d'Haïti was not a separate state but the northern administrative division under President Florvil Hyppolite, who seized power in 1889 after a brutal civil war against the southern government of Légitime. Notes issued under the northern republic's authority predate Hyppolite's formal consolidation — this 1888 example comes from the volatile transitional period when the north and south maintained rival administrations and separate fiscal apparatuses.
Roberts Bank Note Company of Toronto printed the series, one of the earlier Canadian security printing contracts for a Caribbean issuer. The firm was absorbed into the British American Bank Note Company not long after.
