The Banque de la République d'Haïti's relationship with the American Bank Note Company stretched across most of the twentieth century, and this small-denomination note falls within a period when Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier's government was maintaining a studied fiction of monetary stability. The gourde had been pegged to the US dollar at 5:1 since 1919 — one of the longest-held fixed exchange rates in Caribbean history — and printing low denominations through a prestige New York security printer was part of sustaining that credibility.
ABNC's contract work for Haiti during this period used intaglio printing for key elements despite the note's modest face value.
