Haiti's Banque Nationale de la République d'Haïti was the sole institution of issue through this period, operating under tight government control during the Duvalier years. The 1 Gourde of this series circulated during a time when the gourde was pegged at 5 to the US dollar — a rate Haiti had maintained since 1919 and would hold, remarkably, until 1989.
P#501 is a workhorse denomination. These low-value notes typically entered heavy daily circulation and survived poorly as a result.
