Nov. 1923" and two manuscript signatures. The "Goldpfennig" denomination is the giveaway here. By late 1923, the hyperinflation had rendered mark-denominated Notgeld instantly worthless, and regional issuers across Germany scrambled to anchor emergency currency to something stable. The Handelskammer für die Kreise Lörrach und Waldshut — a joint chamber representing industrial interests in two Baden border districts — chose a gold-indexed unit rather than issue yet another note in depreciating paper marks. It was a practical response to a breakdown in the monetary system, not a formal monetary instrument.
Uehlin of Schopfheim handled the printing locally, which was common for small-run Notgeld in this period. The chamber dissolved its emergency currency obligations once the Rentenmark stabilization took hold in November 1923.
