Obverse description The obverse is printed by letterpress on plain paper stock with a light-blue guilloche underprint and a decorative lozenge-pattern border framing the entire face. The denomination "1 Pfennig Gold" appears in large bold type at the top, followed by the series designation "Reihe A." in red and the gold-parity equivalent "= 0,238 Dollarcents" in black, with the issuing authority — the Oberbadische Industriegemeinschaft, represented by the Handelskammer Schopfheim — stated in the central text block alongside the place and date "Schopfheim, 5. Nov. 1923" and two manuscript signatures. A red serial number appears within the text area, and a vertical red legend along the left margin reads "Genehmigt durch das Reichsfinanzministerium," with the printer's imprint "Uehlin, Schopfheim" at the foot.

Comments

The "Goldpfennig" denomination is the giveaway here. By late 1923, the hyperinflation had rendered mark-denominated Notgeld instantly worthless, and regional issuers across Germany scrambled to anchor emergency currency to something stable. The Handelskammer für die Kreise Lörrach und Waldshut — a joint chamber representing industrial interests in two Baden border districts — chose a gold-indexed unit rather than issue yet another note in depreciating paper marks. It was a practical response to a breakdown in the monetary system, not a formal monetary instrument.

Uehlin of Schopfheim handled the printing locally, which was common for small-run Notgeld in this period. The chamber dissolved its emergency currency obligations once the Rentenmark stabilization took hold in November 1923.
