Werner of Falkenstein served as Archbishop of Trier from 1388 until his death in 1418, navigating one of the most turbulent periods in Church history — the Western Schism, during which competing papal claimants fractured Catholic Europe for nearly four decades. As one of the seven Imperial Electors, his political weight extended well beyond ecclesiastical matters; Trier's electoral coinage was instrument of that authority as much as anything else. The Council of Constance, which finally ended the Schism in 1417, met during the precise window this gulden was struck.
