Werner of Falkenstein served as Archbishop of Trier from 1388 until his death in 1418, and his tenure coincided with one of the most fractious periods in the Great Schism, when competing papal claimants demanded political and financial loyalty from German ecclesiastical princes. His goldgulden issues from 1410–1414 fall precisely within the years surrounding the Council of Constance's convocation — a moment when archiepiscopal minting rights were as much a political statement as an economic function.
