Werner of Falkenstein served as Archbishop of Trier from 1388 until his death in 1418, a tenure marked by persistent conflict with the city of Trier itself — the archbishop and the municipal council spent much of the 1390s in open dispute over jurisdictional and financial rights. This goldgulden belongs to a narrow emission window of 1400–1402, a period when the Rhenish electoral mints were under renewed pressure to maintain gold coinage conforming to the Rhenish Union standards first codified in 1386.
Trier's mint output under Werner was modest, and pieces traceable to Noss Tr#318 appear infrequently in major auction records.
