Obverse description Central field displays the four-fold quartered arms of the Archbishopric of Cologne — featuring the heraldic cross of Cologne — borne on a pointed shield, superimposed upon a large patriarchal (double-barred) cross that extends to the inner border. The arms and cross together form the distinctive Cologne archiepiscopal device. A circular beaded inner border frames the design, with the abbreviated archiepiscopal legend in Gothic uncial lettering running around the outer margin between the inner and outer borders.
