Sigismund's Frankfurt goldgulden of 1429–1431 was struck during one of the most financially strained periods of his reign. The emperor had pawned or pledged enormous portions of imperial revenue to fund his decades-long campaigns against the Hussites in Bohemia, and imperial mint operations were frequently disrupted or delegated to cover immediate military debts. Frankfurt's mint operated under imperial authorization but with considerable autonomy, and the city's position as a major commercial hub made it one of the few reliable points of gold coinage output during these years.
The Hussite Wars effectively ended with the Battle of Lipany in 1434, three years after this issue ceased.
