Reverse description A large quartered heraldic shield — displaying the arms of the Archbishopric of Cologne (cross) impaled with the Palatinate lion — superimposed at the centre of a long cross whose arms extend to the inner circle, dividing the field into four quarters. The cross arms are elaborately decorated with a ladder or grille pattern. The surrounding Gothic legend in uncial characters reads MOn nOVA AVRE A RIL, abbreviated for 'Moneta Nova Aurea' referencing the new gold coinage.
