| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse presents a devotional composition depicting the enthroned Madonna and Child: the Virgin Mary is shown seated frontally, crowned and nimbed, holding the Christ Child on her lap; the Infant is likewise nimbed and holds an orb. Below the group, a large Electoral crown rests upon a globe, symbolising Maximilian I's role as prince of the Empire. The surrounding legend CLYPEVS. OMNIBVS. INJ. TE. SPERANTIBVS — 'A shield to all who trust in Thee' — reflects the Bavarian Elector's deep Marian piety and his devotion to the Virgin as protectress of his dynasty. The composition is rendered in the bold, high-relief style characteristic of early seventeenth-century South German hammered gold coinage. |
