Reverse description Three heraldic shields arranged in triangular formation within the field: the wheel of Mainz (upper left), the lozengy arms of Bavaria-Palatinate (upper right), and the arms of Trier (lower center), reflecting the three Electoral co-issuers of the Rhenish goldgulden type. The circular legend in Gothic uncial script records the Anno Domini date in Roman numerals. A beaded inner border frames the composition, consistent with the standard Rhenish Kurfürstengulden reverse design.

Additional information

Louis IV of the Palatinate — the Elector known as "der Sanftmütige," the Gentle — struck these gulden during a period of intense electoral politics following the Council of Basel, when the Rhenish electors were leveraging every instrument of fiscal authority they possessed against papal and imperial pressure. The Rhine tolls funded much of this coinage directly. Felke 1235 is among the more precisely documented Palatine goldgulden of the mid-fifteenth century, attributable to the Bacharach or Heidelberg minting operations.
