Additional information

The 1864 Goldgulden was issued under Ludwig II just months after his accession at age eighteen, following the sudden death of Maximilian II in March of that year. Bavaria had no strong tradition of gold gulden coinage by this point — the issue belongs to a short-lived series produced more for prestige and presentation purposes than everyday commerce, which explains why survivors so frequently appear in grades inconsistent with any genuine circulation history.
