The Neujahrsgoldgulden — New Year's gold gulden — was a Bavarian court tradition in which the king distributed gold pieces as gifts to members of the royal household and high officials at the start of each year. Louis I revived and formalized the practice, and these pieces were struck specifically for presentation, not circulation. The series spanning 1843–1848 aligns with the final turbulent years of his reign, which ended in abdication in March 1848 following the political scandal surrounding his relationship with the dancer Lola Montez.
The .770 fineness is notably below standard coinage gold, a deliberate choice consistent with the Rhenish gulden's historical alloy specification rather than any cost-cutting measure.
