The Neujahrsgoldgulden — New Year's gold gulden — was a Bavarian court tradition, struck annually as gifts distributed by the king to members of the royal household and favored officials. These were never intended for commercial circulation. Ludwig I commissioned them throughout his reign as personal presentations, which explains both their consistently high survival condition and the relatively tight mintage figures that characterize the entire series.
Ludwig's abdication in 1848 following the scandal surrounding his affair with Lola Montez brought the tradition to an abrupt end.
