Kuno of Falkenstein served simultaneously as Archbishop of Trier and administrator of the Cologne archdiocese following the death of Engelbert III in 1368 — an unusual dual role that lasted only until Wilhelm von Gennep's successor was properly installed. His authority to strike coinage for Cologne during this interim period rested on his administrative appointment rather than full archiepiscopal consecration, making these gulden a product of an interregnum rather than an established reign. The Rhenish gulden standard governing this issue had been fixed by the Kurverein of 1354, binding the four Rhenish electors to a common weight and fineness.
