John II of Nassau held the archiepiscopal see of Mainz from 1397 until his death in 1419, a tenure marked by the Archbishopric's persistent entanglement in the fractious politics of the Holy Roman Empire. Mainz was one of the seven imperial electors, and its coinage carried genuine political weight — these gulden circulated as instruments of electoral diplomacy as much as trade currency. The 1414–1417 window corresponds directly with the Council of Constance, convened to resolve the Western Schism, which John attended as a principal ecclesiastical figure.
Felke 920 is well documented within the Rhine goldgulden series, struck to the weight standard established by the Electoral Rhenish Mint Convention of 1386.
