Gotthard Kettler was the last Master of the Livonian Order, and these gulden were struck during the Order's death spiral — the opening years of the Livonian War, when Ivan IV's forces had already shattered the eastern territories and the Order was desperately negotiating its own dissolution. Kettler would formally secularize the Order in 1561, converting its remaining Livonian holdings into the Duchy of Courland as a Polish-Lithuanian vassal. These coins were effectively minted by an institution that knew it was ceasing to exist.
Wenden, the administrative seat of the Order, fell to Russian forces in 1577, nearly two decades after this issue — but the city's mint had already outlived the institution that founded it.
