Gerlach of Nassau served as Archbishop of Mainz from 1346 until his death in 1371, and his tenure coincided with the pivotal Golden Bull of 1356 — the imperial edict issued by Charles IV that formally codified the electoral rights of the seven German princes, Mainz among them. That document effectively guaranteed Mainz's position as the leading electoral archbishopric, and the goldgulden issues of this period are direct products of the monetary authority that status conferred.
The Rhenish goldgulden was by this point a cooperative currency among the four electoral Rhenish princes, with weight and fineness regulated by periodic inter-princely agreements beginning in 1354 — the opening year of this type's production.
