Frederick III of Saarwerden served as Archbishop of Cologne from 1370 to 1414, one of the longer and more politically turbulent tenures of the medieval Rhenish church. In 1376, the Rhenish electoral princes — Cologne among them — formed the Rhenish League in direct opposition to the expansionist ambitions of the Wittelsbach and Luxembourg dynasties, and coinage issued in this narrow window was partly an assertion of independent monetary authority within that coalition.
