Frederick III of Saarwerden served as Archbishop of Cologne from 1370 to 1414, one of the longer pontificates of the medieval Rhineland. As one of the seven imperial electors, the Archbishop of Cologne held the right to elect the Holy Roman Emperor — a political weight that made the archiepiscopal mint at Cologne a significant player in the Rhenish gold coinage system. These gulden circulated alongside issues from the other Rhenish electors under agreements that periodically standardized weight and fineness across the region, the most notable being the Rhenish Monetary Union.
