Frederick II inherited a mint system still digesting the upheaval of the Reformation, during which ecclesiastical control over Danish coinage had collapsed and royal authority rushed in to fill the vacuum. The 1564 Goldgulden was struck at a moment when Frederick was actively consolidating monetary policy ahead of the Northern Seven Years' War, which broke out that same year against Sweden. War financing meant gold was being hoarded and melted as fast as it was coined.
Fr#24 is among the rarer Frederician gold pieces. Surviving examples are heavily concentrated in Scandinavian institutional collections, with few reaching open auction.
