Obverse description Within an ornate cartouche-style shield, the crowned royal initial 'F' for King Frederick II is displayed prominently in the field. The shield is surmounted by a decorative crown with scrollwork flourishes flanking either side, giving the design an elaborately Renaissance character. Portions of the date appear divided on either side of the shield. The flan is of irregular square klippe form, characteristic of hammered emergency or presentation coinage of the period.
