Ferdinand of Bavaria held the bishopric of Münster from 1612 until his death in 1650, accumulating ecclesiastical offices across the Rhineland and Westphalia with a persistence that alarmed even Rome at times. This goldgulden was struck during the Thirty Years' War, when Münster's finances were under sustained pressure from troop quartering, war contributions, and shifting military alliances in the region. The date range coincides with Swedish forces operating in northern Germany, making uninterrupted mint production anything but guaranteed.
Fr#1762 is among the scarcer Münster gold issues of the period.
