The eagle's wings are spread and its body rendered in fine hammered detail typical of mid-sixteenth-century German goldsmith work. The encircling Latin legend CAROLI.V.IMP. AVG.P.F.DECRETO references the decree of Emperor Charles V, under whose imperial authority the goldgulden coinage was sanctioned. |
