Waldeck's goldgulden issues of this period were struck under the joint rule of Christian and Wolrad IV, a co-regency arrangement common among the fragmented Protestant lordships of the Holy Roman Empire in the years immediately preceding the Thirty Years' War. The county's mint output was modest by any measure, and gold issues from this window are genuinely scarce — Waldeck lacked the financial machinery of larger territories and struck gold primarily when dynastic circumstances demanded visible prestige coinage.
