Additional information

Adolphus I issued this gulden during one of the most fractious periods in Mainz electoral history — his archiepiscopate was contested almost from the start, and his political survival depended heavily on alliances with the Rhenish princes who collectively controlled the region's gold coinage. The Rhenish gulden standard, formalized by the Kurverein of 1386, bound Mainz, Trier, Cologne, and the Palatinate to a shared weight and fineness agreement specifically to stabilize trade along the Rhine. This coin was struck under exactly those terms.

Felke 474 is among the less commonly encountered attributions in the Adolphus series.
