Hildesheim's civic coinage rights were a persistent source of friction with the prince-bishopric that surrounded the city. The years 1623–1628 fall squarely within the early devastation of the Thirty Years' War, when northern German trade networks were collapsing and gold coinage from reliable civic mints commanded a premium precisely because episcopal and princely issues were being debased with some regularity.
The Reichsguldiner standard underpinning this issue traces to the 1559 Augsburg coinage ordinance — still the governing framework six decades later, though increasingly strained by wartime fiscal pressure from every direction.
