Brunswick's civic goldgulden of this period was struck against a backdrop of monetary catastrophe. The Kipper- und Wipperzeit — the great debasement crisis of 1619–1623 — had so thoroughly destroyed confidence in base-metal coinage across the German lands that municipalities with access to gold stocks rushed to assert monetary credibility through bullion issues. The city of Brunswick, jealous of its independent civic status within Lower Saxony, was among them.
The eleven-year span of this type reflects die reuse rather than continuous fresh production. Jesse's attribution distinguishes this as the second die variety of KM#26.
