Nuremberg's right to strike gold coinage derived from an imperial privilege granted by Sigismund in 1422, one of the few such grants made to a free city rather than a territorial prince. By the 1490s the city's goldsmiths and assayers had developed a reputation precise enough that Nuremberg-struck gold circulated well beyond the city's commercial reach, carried along the same trade routes that moved its metalwork and printed books across the Empire.
The fineness of .986 was no accident — Nuremberg's mint ordinances were enforced with unusual rigor, and the city's assay records from this decade survive in the Stadtarchiv.
