Sierra Leone achieved independence from Britain in April 1961, but the commemorative coinage program took several years to materialize. The golde denomination was created specifically for this issue — a new unit with no prior circulation history, essentially invented to give the independence series a nominally Sierra Leonean identity rather than issuing in sterling or leone fractions.
At 54.5 grams of .900 gold, this is among the heavier commemorative gold pieces produced for Anglophone African independence celebrations of the 1960s. The Royal Mint handled production.
