Opmerkingen

Tannu Tuva's paper currency of 1928 occupies an odd place in monetary history. The People's Republic was nominally independent — recognized by the Soviet Union and Mongolia, ignored by virtually everyone else — and its early banknotes reflect that precarious status. The 1 Gold Rouble denomination tied Tuvan paper to a metallic standard the republic had no real capacity to back, a fiction that suited Soviet economic interests in the region far better than it served Tuvans.

The series is scarce. Tuva's population was small, nomadic in large part, and barter remained the practical medium of exchange for much of the rural interior. Formal currency simply didn't penetrate deeply.
