Obverse description Armored and draped bust of Philip II facing right, wearing an elaborately decorated crown, with a ruffled collar visible at the neck. The effigy is rendered in a bold, high-relief hammered style characteristic of mid-16th-century Netherlandish coinage. A beaded inner circle frames the portrait, with the legend distributed around the periphery of the field, commencing at upper right. The inscription reads PHS · D · G · HISP · Z REX · DVX · BRAB ·, abbreviated titles identifying Philip as King of Spain and Duke of Brabant.
