Philip II inherited the seventeen provinces of the Low Countries from his father Charles V in 1555, but his aggressive religious and fiscal policies — particularly the introduction of new bishoprics and the Tenth Penny tax — drove Brabant toward open revolt within a decade. This specific emission, distinguished by the omission of "ANG" (Angliae) from the royal titulature, reflects the period after Philip's claim to the English throne lapsed following the death of Mary I in 1558. The title was quietly dropped from Netherlands coinage shortly thereafter.
Production at the Antwerp mint was disrupted severely by 1566 onward as iconoclasm and the Duke of Alba's subsequent crackdown destabilized the southern provinces.
