Obverse description A rampant lion sejant faces left within an elaborate Gothic architectural canopy, rendered in the ornate Burgundian court style. Firesteels (briquets), flints, and sparks — emblems of the Order of the Golden Fleece — are displayed at either side of the canopy. The peripheral legend in uncial Gothic lettering is separated by mullets and runs clockwise within a beaded inner border. The overall composition reflects the high Gothic craftsmanship characteristic of Flemish hammered gold coinage of the mid-fifteenth century.
