| Obverse description | Right-facing armored and crowned bust of Henry II, rendered in high relief in the Renaissance style, with curly hair, a short beard, and an ornate fleur-de-lis crown surmounted by a cross. The king wears elaborately engraved armor with a ruffled collar visible at the neck. The royal effigy is large and boldly executed, occupying the greater part of the flan. The circular Latin legend runs along the outer border, separated from the bust by an inner beaded circle. |

| Reverse description | Central crowned shield of France semé of fleurs-de-lis, flanked on either side by a crowned Gothic letter H, the royal cipher of Henry II, all set within a beaded inner circle. The crowned shield and royal ciphers are rendered with fine detail characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century French hammered coinage. The date 1549 and the mint mark L for Bayonne appear integrated within the circular Latin legend on the outer border. The legend is punctuated by ornamental stops and reads continuously around the coin. |
