Obverse description Central field displays the crowned royal arms of France, a shield semé of fleurs-de-lis, surmounted by a large royal crown with floral finials. Flanking the shield at either side are the crowned initials C and C (for Carolus/Charles), each accompanied by a small heraldic crown below. The surrounding circular legend in Latin reads SIT NOMEN DNI BENEDIC with the Roman numeral date MDLXIIII (1564), interrupted by ornamental stops. The coin's periphery is bordered by a beaded inner circle typical of hammered French gold coinage of the Valois period. The overall style reflects the transitional artistic conventions of mid-sixteenth-century French royal minting.
