| Obverse description | Central shield bearing the Medici arms (six balls, orle of six torteaux) surmounted by the papal crossed keys and tiara, all within a pointed heraldic escutcheon. Flanking the upper portion of the shield are the enthroned figures of Saints Peter (left, holding a key and sword) and Paul (right, holding a book), each identified by their respective initial letters P·S· above. The surrounding legend reads LEO X PONT M S P S P in Latin characters, interrupted by the two apostolic figures, within a beaded border. The overall design reflects the High Renaissance papal minting style characteristic of the Medici pontificate. |
