| Obverse description | Papal coat of arms surmounted by the papal tiara and the keys of Saint Peter, displayed within an ornate cartouche or shield in the central field. The arms are rendered in the mannered Renaissance style typical of mid-sixteenth-century papal coinage. A draped bust of Pope Julius III faces right in the upper portion of the shield area, wearing the papal camauro. The circumferential Latin legend reads IVLIVS·III·PONT·MAX·, denoting Julius III as Supreme Pontiff, and is bordered by a rope-pattern inner circle. |
