Obverse description Central shield bearing the Della Rovere coat of arms — an oak tree with spreading branches on the lower half — surmounted by the crossed keys of Saint Peter and the papal tiara above. The escutcheon is set within an inner beaded or linear circle. The surrounding legend reads IVLIVS·II·PONT·MAX· in Roman capitals, distributed around the periphery of the coin in the characteristic Renaissance papal style.

Reverse description Two standing full-length figures of the apostolic patrons of Rome: Saint Peter on the right, bearded and draped, holding the keys of heaven and a book, and Saint Paul on the left, also draped, holding a sword and a book. Between the two figures at the base, the mark of the Fugger banking house (a trident or merchant's mark) appears in the exergue, with the mint name ROME below. The divided legend PASTOR · DOCTOR · flanks the figures at left and right within the field.
