| Beschrijving voorzijde | Crowned papal arms of Innocent XI displayed within an ornate baroque shield, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys. The escutcheon bears the Odescalchi family heraldic device featuring horizontal bands and a lion passant, rendered in high relief with elaborate foliate mantling flanking the shield. The circular Latin legend reads partially around the periphery, with the coin surrounded by a milled border. |

Innocent XI — Benedetto Odescalchi — was elected in 1676 after rejecting the papacy twice before, and his reign was defined less by ceremony than by fiscal austerity and confrontation with Louis XIV over the Gallican Articles. The legend on this giulio, drawn from Proverbs 28:27, was not decorative piety: Innocent genuinely restructured papal charitable institutions and was formally beatified in 1956 largely on the strength of his documented works toward the poor.
1683 marks the Ottoman siege of Vienna, which Innocent helped finance and diplomatically orchestrate — arguably the most consequential political act of his pontificate.
