| Reverse description | Saint Peter standing facing, robed in pontifical vestments, holding a large key in his right hand and a book in his left hand. The figure is rendered in a stylized late-medieval manner typical of hammered coinage of the Papal States. The surrounding circular Latin legend identifies the mint city and the apostolic patron saint of Ancona. |

Guido Ascanio Sforza served as papal legate governing Ancona and held the title of Cardinal Camerlengo — the office responsible for administering the Church's temporal affairs during a vacancy of the Holy See. The year 1555 saw two conclaves: Marcellus II died after just 22 days, and the sede vacante issues struck under Sforza's authority therefore span an unusually compressed and turbulent stretch of papal succession.
As Camerlengo, Sforza held the explicit right to authorize coinage during interregna. This giulio is one of the more localized expressions of that authority, struck at Ancona rather than Rome.
